Publishers, believing these claims, borrowed billions of dollars and sold equity to produce more videos, but the videos never caught on for Facebook. In 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced a new strategy to create a virtual world called the metaverse, but is this strategy going to go a similar route?

Roko's basilisk is a thought experiment that suggests a future artificial superintelligence could create a virtual reality simulation to punish anyone who knew of its existence but did not help create it. The theory led to some users experiencing symptoms such as nightmares and mental breakdowns, prompting a ban on discussion of the theory on the site for five years. However, these reports were later dismissed as exaggeration and the theory itself was dismissed as nonsense.
